How to weave patterns into your home decor

If you’re nervous about choosing / using patterned decor in your home like I used to be but want to getting away from solid blocks of colour, here’s a few tips that I hope you will find helpful…

  • Start small with low risk/ low cost accessories such as tea towels, vases, table cloths or cushions - they can add a pop of pattern but can be easily changed and won’t overpower a space

  • Remember sometimes less is more…. 1-2 patterned items will clearly stand out vs. having loads of patterned decor as there isn’t too much for the eyes to focus on

  • If you want to create a tranquil space, choose small, delicate / gentle patterns vs. large motifs and bold designs

  • If you are adding several patterned items a room then mix small and large sized prints together - ie don’t choose all large prints or the room will feel ‘shouty’ and too many small patterns will feel busy but with no focal point

  • Make sure the patterns connect to each other and the rest of the room in some way i.e. they share the same colour palette or style

  • Always order wallpaper and fabric samples so you can accurately assess the size of the pattern in your space as online close up photos can be really deceiving!

  • Patterns can date more quickly than colours so don’t rush in to buying higher ticket or more permanent patterned items like blinds, curtains, tiles or wallpaper! If in doubt, keep these plain and pack a pattern shaped punch via your accessories instead 👊🏻🙂

There’s no hard and fast rules though and if you’re a maximalist at heart then go pattern ct!
